Abstract

The aim of this paper is to briefly present the nature of air pollution as part of environmental law with reference to its scientific background, the history of development of this branch of law through activity of the United Nations and the European Union, the most significant regulations adopted by these organisations and measures for fighting air pollution. In the first part of the paper, the author focuses on the nature of environmental law, particularly on air pollution, the most common pollutants, its sources, and effects on human health and environment. The second part contains the review of the most important regulations regarding ozone depletion and climate change. In the third part, the author provides information on ambient air quality legislation, followed by specific measures imposed by this legislation. Finally, the fourth part reviews the contribution of the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights to the development of international environmental law.
