Prof. Kapil Gupta is working as a Full Professor at the University of Johannesburg and is currently serving the Dept. of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Technology at Doornfontein Campus. His Bachelors qualification is in Mechanical Engineering and his Masters is in Computer Integrated Manufacturing. He obtained a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the reputed Indian Institute of Technology Indore (India) with a specialization in Advanced Manufacturing. His PhD research was focused on the advanced machining of gears by wire electric discharge machining. He also completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education from the University of Johannesburg in 2020.
Prof. Gupta has more than ten years of professional experience in academic and research fields. Modern machining processes, precision engineering, gear technology, sustainable manufacturing, and industry 4.0 are the areas of his interest. He is a Y-rated researcher by the National Research Foundation South Africa and a member of the South African Young Academy of Science. He is registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineering Technologist.
Prof. Kapil Gupta teaches manufacturing engineering, material science, manufacturing systems design, and research methodology to the BEngTech students at undergraduate and honours levels. He is actively involved in several academic activities and bears important administrative responsibilities at the department and university. He is doing research, innovation, and training projects funded by international agencies like the National Research Foundation-SOUTH AFRICA and the Royal Academy of Engineering-UK, with national and international collaborators. He has successfully supervised twelve Masters and Doctoral students and hosted four Postdoctoral Research Fellows. He is currently supervising fifteen postgraduate students and hosting three senior research associates.
Prof. Gupta has authored a total of a hundred high-quality research and review articles that have been published in high-impact international journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has also authored and edited twenty international books on advanced manufacturing topics, such as hybrid machining, advanced gear manufacturing, micro and precision manufacturing, spark erosion machining, and sustainable manufacturing. He is currently serving on the editorial boards of five international journals and as associate editor for two others. He is also editing two international book series. Prof. Kapil Gupta, with his research group, has received best paper and poster awards. He is solicited by international institutes, universities, and societies for expert and keynote talks.
Prof. Gupta actively participates in SOTL research and training and has developed a virtual lab on manufacturing engineering for remote learning. His teaching and learning activities are aligned with engineering education 4.0 and sustainable development goals.
